Symposium
Zion United Church Community Room| 32 Weber Street
The Open Ears Symposium is an open forum for discussion amongst artists involved in the festival, and the general public. Each of the three sessions combines an eclectic array of festival artists and other experts who have, in the past, expressed ideas around the general theme of that session. This year’s symposium centres around the social relevance of new music and Sound Art. The fine arts are in a period of transition in their relation to the public, adjusting especially to changing demographics and a post-modern environment which challenges traditional notions of fine art. This symposium will examine aspects of this tradition - providing a snapshot of the current ‘society’ of those who attend new music events; examining the increasing role women play in our field; and examining the idea of political relevancy by a group of politically active artists. The second of these sessions is part of a celebration of the Association for Canadian Women Composers' 25th anniversary.
