Ballantyne/Harms Duo - Sound of the Mountain - Nakamura/Taxt Duo
[Improvisation – Sound – Process - Music]
In this international, cross-Canadian, and local triple bill we have a chance to explore three different approaches to the intersection of improvisation, composition, technology and performance. This will be an intense, immersive, and brain-rewiring night of performance.
From Japan, internationally acclaimed no-input mixing-board master Toshimaru Nakamura is joined by Norwegian microtonal tuba virtuoso Martin Taxt in a duo that brilliantly combines electronics and acoustic sound sources, exploring texture, noise and sonic landscape. Between them, they have worked with a virtual who's-who of experimental, new-music, noise, and drone artists, and are involved in record labels and performance venues and series internationally.
From Quebec (and just back from a huge tour across Canada, Asia, and the Pacific rim), comes Sound of the Mountain, an astounding duo of Elizabeth Millar (amplified clarinet) and Craig Pedersen (amplified trumpet). Together they have developed a rich language of extended playing and sound creation for their instruments in pursuit of an immersive, expansive sonic world this is at times harrowing, at times achingly delicate.
From right here in KW, comes local heroes Neil Ballantyne and Ted Harms. In addition to their duo which masterfully brings together electronics, keyboards and double bass into otherworldly drone adventures, they are the heart of the VOC Silent Film Silent Film Harmonic and run the wonderful Admission of Guilt performance series.
Many thanks to Admission of Guilt for helping to co-present this program. Thanks to our friends at FIMAV for their help, and to Craig Pedersen for taking it all on the road. Ben would also like to thank Rich and the OE board for the invitation to be part of the festival.
